The Tosa Inu — also known as the Tosa Ken or Japanese Mastiff — is one of the rarest and most imposing dog breeds in the world, and the only large fighting breed developed in Japan. The breed was created in the Tosa region of Shikoku Island (present-day Kōchi Prefecture) during the Meiji period of the late 19th century, when Japanese breeders systematically crossed the native Shikoku Ken with a series of large Western breeds — including the Mastiff, Great Dane, Saint Bernard, Bulldog, and German Pointer — with the explicit goal of creating a dog capable of competing in the traditional Japanese sport of dog sumo, known as tōken. Unlike Western dog fighting, Japanese dog sumo is conducted under strict rules of silence and ceremony — the dogs wear elaborate ceremonial aprons similar to those worn by sumo wrestlers, and a dog that yelps, cries, or shows fear is immediately disqualified, regardless of the outcome. This tradition shaped the Tosa's most defining character trait: an extraordinary stoicism and pain tolerance combined with a calm, dignified, and almost silent demeanor. The Tosa is a massive dog — males typically weigh between 100 and 200 pounds — with a short, dense red, fawn, apricot, black, or brindle coat, a broad head, heavy dewlap, and a powerful, athletic build. The breed is extremely rare outside Japan. The Tosa Inu was recognized by the AKC's Foundation Stock Service in 1997.
